Aim of the game

To make your hand look stronger than your opponents. You don’t need to have the best hand, you just need them to think you do so they will fold before seeing cards.

Deck of cards

There are 52 cards in a deck. You can use one or two different color decks. The other deck is next to the player who will deal next. Players decide before if they want to use one or both jokers. Jokers can be used to supplement any other card or represent any other card.

Number of players

This game can be played with two to seven players. The best games are usually played with five or six people. Players play as individuals, without partners.

Order and value of the cards

In poker, the order of the cards is ace, king, queen, jack, ten, nine, eight and seven. The suits are all worth the same in any poker hand.

Dealing the cards

The dealer starts by dealing out cards face up to each player, one at a time. The player who gets the first jack (J) is the dealer for the next round. The dealer then gives the player on their left the choice to cut the deck, but this is the only person who can do this. If they choose to cut, they must leave at least five cards in the deck. Next, the dealer gives each player five cards, one at a time. The turn to be dealer then passes to the player on the right.

Poker hands

Each player selects the five cards they want to keep, discarding the others. The hands are then ranked in order from highest to lowest value as follows:

FIVE OF A KIND

If you have 5 cards of the same number, with one being a wild card, that is the best hand possible. If you have two wild cards, the best hand is the one with the highest numbers.

STRAIGHT FLUSH

This is the best hand possible without using a wild card. It is made up of five cards of the same suit and sequential value. The highest straight flush is called a Royal Straight Flush and it is made up of the five highest cards in that suit. If two players have this hand, they split the winnings.

FOUR OF A KIND

If you have four cards of the same rank, the four highest cards win.

FULL HOUSE

The combination of three cards of the same rank with two other cards that are equal to each other. The player with the highest three of a kind wins.

FLUSH

If you have five cards of the same suit, but they are not in a particular order, the player with the highest card wins. If there is a tie, then the next highest card is used to determine the winner. If both players have cards of equal value, then they both win and share the money.

STRAIGHT

There are five cards in a row, but they are not all the same suit. The ace can be linked with the king or the deuce. The highest card in the row wins. If there is a tie, then the people who have cards in the row share the money.

THREE OF A KIND

If you have three cards of the same rank, and two other cards that are different, the card with the highest rank wins. If there is a tie (two or more cards with the same rank), then nobody wins.

TWO PAIR

If you have two card pairs of different rank, the one with the highest pair wins. If the pairs are equal, then the player with the second highest pair wins. If both players have the same card rank for both pairs, then the player with the highest fifth card (not in either pair) wins. If there is still a tie, then both players share the winnings.

PAIR

If two players have the same rank card, the player with the highest other card wins. If there is still a tie, the player with the highest card in their hand wins. If there is still a tie, the players share the winnings.

NO PAIR

If a game does not have any of the above combinations, the player with the highest card wins. If there is a tie, then both players winnings are shared.

Gameplay

After the players are given their cards, they look at what they can do with them. The players then take turns announcing if they want to play or not. If they do, they bet. If not, they pass. Then the dealer deals out new cards to the players who want them in exchange for the ones they discarded. They can choose to get all five new cards or just some of them.

So Poker is composed of the following steps:

  1. Choose the game mode.
  2. Each player is dealt five cards.
  3. Place bets in order to play the hand.
  4. Discard cards to improve the hand.
  5. Place bets after receiving new cards.
  6. Reveal the cards to see who wins.

OPENING WITH ANTE OR JACK POT BEFORE DISCARDING

To start the game, each player puts in money to get five cards. If you have two jacks or better, you can open the game. Other players can then join by betting more money, folding (meaning they’re out of the game), or calling (meaning they’re in for the same amount as the last player).

If everyone passes without opening, the cards are returned and each player puts in the same amount into the pot as before. If someone opens the Pot and all the others pass, in order to take the Pot they have to show their “Jacks-or-Better” by revealing their cards.

BETS BEFORE DISCARDING IN ORDER TO TAKE PART IN THE GAME

When betting starts, each player can either call (make the minimum bet), raise (bet more than the minimum) or fold (leave the game). If someone calls, they stay in the game and see what everyone else does. Once someone bets, no one else can call and people who called have to decide whether to accept the bet, raise it or fold.

A player can keep playing without being eliminated from the game as long as no other player bets. They can join the game when it is their second turn to speak. If a player keeps playing after someone has bet, they are definitely out of the game and cannot win any money. When all the bets are done, only the players who accepted the highest bets will be left in the game.

If a player bets during their turn, and no one accepts it, they automatically win the pot without having to show their cards. This hand then ends, and new cards are dealt for the next hand. If all of the players pass, then nobody wins and the pot stays on the table for the next hand.
